The Fifth Population Census

 JOINT COMMUNIQUE

July 23, 2007

 

On July 22, 2007, the Oversight Committees for the MDTF-National and the MDTF-South jointly and unconditionally approved the proposal for Phase II of the Fifth Population Census. The Fifth Population Census is one of the most significant milestones in the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). It is the first step towards power sharing, wealth sharing, the elections and the eventual referendum in Sudan. It will also provide data required for policy decisions and planning.

LETTER OF UNDERSTANDING

Between

(The Monitoring and Observers Commission, of Sudan 5th Population and Housing Census),

(hereinafter referred to as the ‘implementing partner’)

and

The United Nations Population Fund

(hereinafter referred to as ‘UNFPA’)

for the implementation of the UNFPA-funded Annual Work Plan(s) (AWPs)

approved as part of the 6th Country Programme

Honorable Members

It gives me great honor that I address your Honorable House and Convey to you that the Census Count, in its twelvth (12th ) day is continuing very smoothly and safely all over the Sudan .

This judegement is based on the daily reports that we receive regularly at the Control Room of MOC; I would like to assure the Honorable Council that ALL the reports are positive and good, including those from Darfur and Southern Sudan.

Introduction

I have signed a contract with UNFPA to undertake a set of activities for the Monitoring and Observation Committee (MOC) during the above stated period. A set of terms of reference was prepared by MOC to mainly, undertake revision of the (Quick Count) conducted by The Census authorities in the North and in the South during 2007. The terms of reference included the following:

1/ locating the approximate center of the selected Villages/ Quarter Council (Ltd./Long) using Global Positioning System (GPS).

2/ locating the approximate V./QC. boundary using GPS (TRACKING) .

3/ Registation of number of hhds. in the V./QC. According to the estimation of the Chief, and also thought actual Count.
